Shropshire Badger Group is a relatively small charity formed in 1987 in response to a problem of badger digging across the County and although there are still regular instances of badger abuse, our focus at the moment is to provide badger vaccination wherever we can in order to persuade the farming community that this is a much better way of delivering disease control for bovine TB than indiscriminate badger culling.
We took a major decision last year to offer free badger vaccination to the first six farmers to contact us and immediately committed several thousand pounds to get members trained as vaccinators and provide all the necessary equipment to meet the exacting standards required by Natural England.
And now, as other farmers have contacted us and we have two teams operating on ten farms across the county, we need to replenish our reserves so that we can afford the continuing cost of the vaccine, at £20 per badger, and hopefully take on more farms. Although new applicants will be asked to contribute towards the overall costs.
Bovine TB is a difficult problem for the cattle industry but all the evidence suggests that badgers are not the major reservoir of disease that some would suggest, and we believe that our contribution for the next four years or more, will be both reasonable and proportionate and delivered at a fraction of the cost of culling.
We are very confident that we can deliver a successful scheme and any contributions you can make towards our costs will be much appreciated.
